Every print in the shop is carved and printed by hand by Joel Kisker in a small studio in Hull, on the Massachusetts coast. This page answers the questions people ask most often: what makes a linocut an original print, how limited editions work, how to choose a frame, and how ordering, shipping, and returns work.
Details that change from print to print, such as size, paper, edition size, and a suggested frame size, are listed on each print's product page. If you don't find your answer here, email hello@joelkisker.com or use the contact form. For printmaking terms, see The Printmaking Glossary.
About the prints
- What is a linocut print?
- A linocut is a hand-made relief print. The artist carves a design into a block of linoleum, rolls ink onto the raised surface, and presses paper onto it by hand. Every print is pulled from the carved block one at a time, so each one is an original print, not a copy.
- Are your prints originals or reproductions?
- Every print is an original. Joel carves each block by hand and pulls every print himself in his studio on the Massachusetts coast. Nothing is digitally printed or reproduced.
- Who makes the prints?
- Joel Kisker carves and prints everything himself in a small studio in Hull, Massachusetts. His work features nautical, local, and historical New England subjects.
- Why does my print look slightly different from the photo?
- Because every print is pulled by hand, each one has its own small variations in ink coverage and texture. No two are identical, which is part of what makes a hand-pulled print special.
- Are the prints limited editions?
- Yes. Each print is made in a limited edition, and the edition size is listed on its product page. Every print is signed and numbered on the front, for example "3/10." Once an edition sells out, it is never reprinted.
- Are the prints signed?
- Yes. Every print is signed and numbered by Joel on the front.
- What paper and ink do you use?
- Joel uses archival, acid-free papers and inks chosen to last. The exact paper and ink for each print are listed on its product page.
Size, framing, and care
- What sizes are your prints?
- Prints come in a range of sizes, from mini prints to larger pieces. The exact size of each print, in inches and millimeters, is listed on its product page.
- Do prints come framed?
- No. Prints are sold unframed and ship flat in a protective sleeve, ready for you to frame.
- How do I frame my print?
- Most prints fit standard frame sizes. Ready-made frames, with or without a mat, are widely available from online retailers and home decor stores. A mat gives a print breathing room and a finished look: choose a frame one or two sizes larger than the print and a mat with an opening just smaller than the print. A local frame shop can also cut a custom mat. Each product page lists a suggested frame size.
- How should I care for my print?
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, and handle it by the edges. Framing it behind glass is the best long-term protection.
